The Best Banana Recipes
Every time I walk into someone’s kitchen there is a bunch of bananas on the countertop. They’re a kitchen staple, right?! They’re affordable, delicious, and a fruit that everyone can get behind. You can bake with them, put them in smoothies, add them to oatmeal, and so many other applications.
Look at your own countertop and tell me if you see some bananas! Are they begging to be baked with?! I’m sure they are and I’m here today to share with you some of my favorite banana recipes.
Yes, of course, I have some pretty amazing banana bread recipes (like my all-time favorite Banana Bread). But not all banana recipes need to be banana bread! I love using them in smoothies, overnight oats, muffins, and energy balls. They’re versatile and add so much nutritional value to some of our favorite recipes. Let’s learn a little bit more about bananas!
Are Bananas Healthy?
Bananas are loaded with nutrition! This is why they are a great snack on their own or when you incorporate them into your favorite banana recipes. Here’s what makes a banana such a nutrient-loaded superfood!
- Packed with potassium: Potassium is an important nutrient for those of you who like to move your bodies! It promotes healthy bones, aids your muscles, and helps control your blood pressure.
- Fiber-filled: Fiber is necessary for healthy digestion and it helps you feel full for longer periods of time. And this makes bananas a great snack when you’re trying to lose or maintain weight.
- Positive carb choice: Bananas are a healthy source of carbohydrates! These positive carbs give you lots of energy to get through the day.
- Plus lots of vitamins and minerals: Bananas are a great place to help you get your daily dose of vitamins B6, C, A, and magnesium.
How to Properly Store Bananas
The one tricky thing about bananas is that they can ripen very fast! Which makes it harder to enjoy them fresh on their own but it does make them great for baking banana recipes. When bananas start to ripen and turn brown they get sweeter and wonderful for bread, cookies, and muffins.
So it’s not the end of the world when they start to brown, but I still like to keep them yellow for snacking, too. Here are a few storage tips to keep your bananas fresh and tasty for however you want to enjoy them.
- Store bananas in a cool and dry spot. Ideally, the spot should not be in direct sunlight either.
- Separate the bananas. Breaking up the bunch will slow down ripening.
- Keep them away from other fruit. Storing next to other ripened fruit will cause a banana to ripen quicker.
Can I Freeze Bananas?
Yes, you can freeze bananas! We’ve all been there – we have a bunch of ripened bananas and no time to bake with them right away. It happens far too often, but I have the perfect solution for you!
Freezing the bananas is a great way to preserve them until you’re ready to use them in these banana recipes. Always peel them first and then place them in a plastic bag. Label and date the bananas and try to use them within 3 months.
Always thaw the frozen bananas before you bake with them. But keep them frozen for when you want to use them in a smoothie! A frozen banana = a perfectly creamy smoothie. It’s my favorite!
