The Best Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts Recipe
“Ew, Brussels sprouts!” Friends, these are words that you’ll never hear again! I’ve found the perfect recipe for making this notoriously hated vegetable one of my family’s absolute favorites. Now they’re begging for these Crispy Air Fryer Asian Brussels Sprouts!
Honestly, air fryer Brussels sprouts are incredible right out of the air fryer and I find myself snacking on them without the sauce, but I have to stop myself because the sauce is amazing! The air fryer works its magic and gets the edges golden brown and crispy. I love when the leaves fall off and they get extra crunchy and “fried”. It just solidifies for me how awesome the air fryer is.
The recipe becomes a solid win in my book when you add a Spicy Asian Sauce. It has all of the Asian flavors you love – sweet, tangy, nutty, and tons of garlic and ginger. Plus, there’s a touch of sriracha to add a little heat. I love how the sauce sneaks into the crevices of the sprouts and you get a ton of flavor in every single bite!
There are so many ways to enjoy this recipe, too. You can serve them as an app (dip them in my Boom Boom Sauce – you won’t regret it!) or as a side to one of your favorite Asian-inspired dinners.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Here’s why you’re going to love this easy Brussels sprouts recipe:
- Seconds, please! Ok, I know that Brussels sprouts aren’t everyone’s favorite. But this recipe will surely turn the haters into big fans. I haven’t come across anyone who doesn’t devour a plate of these and still wants more!
- “Fried”, but healthy. I’ve ordered fried Brussels sprouts at a restaurant before and they’re amazing – but also deep-fried. So, they don’t leave me feeling super great. These Brussels are just as crispy and delicious but fried the healthy way.
- It’s easy and quick. A lot of the ingredients for the sauce are probably already in your kitchen making this a super simple recipe. Plus, it takes less than 20 minutes to make. So it’s easy to put together when you need a quick app or side dish.
What You’ll Need
The list is below of ingredients you need for this recipe. Check out the recipe card below where there are more details on ingredient amounts and instructions.
- Brussels Sprouts: I like to use fresh Brussels sprouts, but you can also use frozen and there is more info below!
- Olive Oil: Or you can use another cooking oil of your choice.
- Salt: Just a little bit to season the Brussels before frying.
Spicy Asian Sauce Ingredients
- Tamari: Soy sauce can also be used if you are ok with using gluten products. Coconut Aminos are another gluten-free option.
- Honey: Maple syrup is a great alternative.
- Sesame Oil: Sesame oil has a very distinct flavor that’s necessary for this sauce. It’s nutty and earthy and your taste buds will recognize it right away.
- Rice Wine Vinegar: This adds an acid flavor to the sauce which is delicious with the combination of soy and honey.
- Sriracha: You don’t have to use this ingredient if you don’t want the sauce to be spicy.
- Ginger: I recommend using fresh ginger for this recipe. The finer you mince the ginger, the stronger the flavor will be.
- Garlic: Fresh chopped garlic is incredible in this sauce! Many great Asian-inspired dishes have the classic combo of ginger and garlic and this recipe is no exception. Add more if you’re really into garlic!
Can You Use Frozen Brussels Sprouts in the Air Fryer?
You can use frozen brussels sprouts in the air fryer when making this recipe. There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing frozen vs. fresh Brussels.
First, frozen Brussels sprouts are more uniform in size. So they are going to cook more evenly in the air fryer. But with this recipe, they may be a bit tough to cut in half because they are frozen. Therefore, you will want to let them sit out at room temperature for a few minutes before attempting to halve them.
I always find that fresh brussels sprouts vary in size but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing! Once you cut them up you may lose some leaves here and there. So when they go into the air fryer, they are less likely to cook evenly. But, hear me out, that’s kind of what I love about using fresh brussels sprouts!
I love the little ones that get extra golden brown and crispy…and especially the leaves! They’re like little soy and ginger flavored chips.
How to Make Asian Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts
The steps are below for making these delicious little crispy bites!
First, prep the Brussels sprouts. You always want to trim the ends off of them. That part does not taste good! And I like to halve or quarter them so that they get extra crispy and cook quicker!
Next, make the Spicy Asian Sauce. Simply combine the sauce ingredients and set aside.
Season the Brussels sprouts and lay them on the air fryer tray. Then air fry them for a few minutes, give the tray a shake, and cook for another few minutes.
Lastly, add the sauce to the fried Brussels sprouts. Toss the Brussels with the spicy sauce and then they’re good to go! You can garnish with some sesame seeds for added crunch and flavor.
Recipe Tips & Variations
Follow these tips and you’ll get perfectly crispy Brussels sprouts every time!
- Make sure the Brussels sprouts are dry. We talk about this a lot when frying food. It’s so important to make sure that whatever it is you are frying is completely dry. It prevents the air fryer from creating steam (which will NOT result in crispy veggies!). And when the Brussels are dry they crisp up way better!
- Do not overcrowd the basket. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your air fryer. The Brussels sprouts need to be spread out and not touching so that they cook evenly.
- Want more heat? Add some chili paste to the Asian sauce or add more sriracha. And if you don’t want them to be spicy then you can simply omit the sriracha.
What to Serve with Crispy Brussels Sprouts
These Asian-inspired Brussels sprouts are a great side dish or appetizer! Here are some of my favorite ways to serve them.
- Low Carb Chicken Dinner: Add these Brussels sprouts to a simple chicken recipe like Grilled Teriyaki Chicken. The combo is flavor-packed!
- Takeout at Home: Pair this recipe with other Asian-inspired dinners like my Easy Hunan Beef, Chicken Teriyaki Bowls, and Cauliflower Chicken Fried Rice.
- Easy Fish Entrees: I love pairing Brussels with fish. They especially work well with salmon and my Skinny Hoisin Honey Glazed Salmon is just perfect!
How to Store and Reheat Leftovers
I recommend eating these fresh out of the air fryer for the best-tasting Brussels sprouts. But if you do have leftovers, you can simply reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes and they will get crispy again.
Can You Freeze This?
I don’t recommend freezing Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts because they won’t stay as crispy. This is especially the case if you’re using frozen brussels sprouts from the beginning. You won’t regret making this recipe fresh every time!
