Crispy Air Fryer Avocado Fries with Dipping Sauce
In my humble opinion, avocados are the best thing ever. So many good things come from avocados, namely Guacamole (aka heavens dip). So why not make a fry out of it!?
But, to be honest, when I saw this on Pinterest I was like “um… I don’t think that’s gonna work.” Wrong! It totally works. The air fryer gives you the perfect texture, crispy and crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Paired with the perfect sauce and you’ll never want another regular french fry again!
What Are Avocado Fries?
Avocado Fries are freshly sliced avocados that are dredged in an egg wash or milk mixture and then breading of some sort. Next, they are either deep fried, baked or air fried to get that crispy “fry like” texture. I know it may sound like a strange idea at first, but trust me, the contrast between the crunchy fried exterior and the creamy inside is totally addictive.
Recipe Ingredients
This recipe goes fast once you get it going. I highly recommend making sure you have everything out in front of you to make it as smooth as possible. Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe.
- Avocado: Kinda need these to make avocado fries. Wink. Wink. Just sure they are firm or slightly firm, soft and mushy are not what we are going for here.
- Egg & Egg Whites: This will be the wet part for dredging your avocado slices.
- Flour: I use gluten free 1:1 baking flour, King Arthur is my brand of choice.
- Panko: This is what gives your
- Spices: Bring on the spices. I use a combo of garlic powder, smoked paprika, ancho chili powder, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper in the avocado fries and both dipping sauces. Using the same flavors throughout really helps nail down the flavor profile you are going for.
- Cooking Spray: This is key to ensure you’re avocado fries don’t stick and it helps with the “browning” process. I use Chosen Foods Avocado oil cooking spray.
- Honey – You won’t need this for the avocado fries, but you will for both of the dipping sauces. It’s the perfect compliment to the salty avocado fries.
- Stone Ground mustard – Do not go dijon or yellow mustard on me. Make sure you buy the stone ground where you can still see the mustard seeds in the mustard. This will add so much flavor to your honey mustard sauce.
- Cilantro – This fresh chopped up herb is the key ingredient in the cilantro lime dipping sauce we’re making.
- Lime juice – Just a little bit of this lime juice, cuts through the sweetness of the honey and makes the cilantro lime dipping sauces perfectly balanced with sweet, salt and acid.
- Apple cider vinegar – Another key ingredient to the cilantro lime dipping sauce to add a little zest to the sauce.
- Olive Oil – You’ll only need a tablespoon for a dipping sauce.
- Garlic clove – All things in life are better with garlic. You’ll need minced garlic.
How to Make Avocado Fries
This recipe is super easy to make. The key is making sure that your avocado is not too soft, or they will fall apart and break during the dredging process. I like to prep my sauces ahead of time and then make the avocado fries right before serving. Another sauce that would be great with these fries is this Honey Sriracha Aioli. Here’s how to make them:
- Make Dry & Wet Dredge Mixtures: To a small bowl add egg and egg whites. Scramble and set aside. For the dry dredge, add gluten free flour, gluten free panko, garlic powder, smoked paprika and ancho chili powder to a large flat plate. Stir to combine everything together and set aside.
- Prepare Avocados: Cut each avocado in half and remove pit. Then using a spoon, gently scoop out the avocado and place on a cutting board flat side down. Slice each avocado half into 4 strips.
- Make them Crispy: Dredge each avocado slice in the egg mixture first, then in the panko mixture. Be sure to both sides are evenly coated and shake off any excess coating.
- Air Fry: Heat air fryer to 400°F for 2 minutes. Spray air fryer rack with cooking spray and gently place avocado fries in air fryer. Be sure they are not touching or crowding, as this will cause them not to brown. (I was able to fit 8-10 slices per batch) Air fry for 3 minutes, flip, then air fryer an additional 3-4 minutes until breading is slightly browned.Remove avocado fries from air fryer and immediately season with salt.
- Serve: Place on a serving dish along side both dipping sauces.
How to Make Dipping Sauce for Avocado Fries
These fries are delicious on their own, but if you ask me adding not one, but two dipping sauces to the mix just makes everything more fun. Here are my two favorite homemade dipping sauces to serve with avocado fries.
Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce
This dipping sauce is so easy and I actually use it as a marinade and a dressing sometimes. You’re going to love it! Here’s how to make it.
- To a small bowl add honey, stone ground mustard, smoked paprika and garlic powder. Stir to combine. Voila.
Cilantro Lime Dipping Sauce
So if you’ve ever been to the Cheesecake Factory I’m sure you’ve ordered there Avocado Egg rolls before. I use to love them in college. The best part about those egg rolls was the sauce! It was a sweet limey herby sauce and this Cilantro Lime Dipping Sauce tastes just like it! (of the two sauces I liked this one the most) Here’s how to make it.
- To a small bowl, add cilantro, honey, lime juice, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Set aside.
Tips & Tricks for the Best Avocado Fries
For some of the best avocado fries around here are some simple tools to follow.
- Use a ripe avocado. I find the overripe (when they are brown on the inside) break up more. They just don’t hold up to the dredging process before you get them in the air fryer.
- Spray the panko with cooking spray. The oil on the outside helps the panko and avocado crispy up while in the air fryer. Therefore, helping you get that crunchy exterior we all love.
- Flip halfway through. I’ve tried air fryer straight for 8 minutes and it’s just not the same. Set your timer and flip them at 3 minutes so you get evenly browned avocado fries.
- Make both sauces!!! The honey mustard dipping sauce and cilantro lime dipping sauce are both bomb! I love the cilantro, but my kids loved the honey mustard. In addition, it’s just fun to taste test and see who likes what.
Serving Suggestions
Well, it depends on which route you want to go with it. I’ve served these as an appetizer and as a side. Here are our variety things to serve it with from both angles. Honestly, they are going to be good with anything. But here are our favorites.

Can I Reheat Leftover Avocado Fries?
If you have leftover of these, I’ll be shocked. But, if by chance you do you can easily reheat this back up in a toaster oven, under the broiler or in the air fryer for a couple of minutes.
