Baked BBQ Honey Wings

These crispy Baked BBQ Honey Wings are a sweet and spicy dream come true. They’re rubbed with a smoky spice blend and smothered in a homemade honey barbecue sauce infused with sriracha.

Ultra-Crispy Oven Baked Chicken Wings

These easy BBQ chicken wings will fly off the plate! Their sweet, saucy coating has a lovely touch of tanginess from the mustard and a satisfying hint of heat from the sriracha sauce. Underneath is a layer of crispy skin surrounding tender, juicy meat.

Chicken wings are my family’s go-to game day munchie, and these ones more than hit the mark. It only takes 10 minutes to prepare the wings for the oven, and the sauce comes together in a snap while they bake! Once crispy perfection is reached, that sumptuous sauce is slathered on and the rest is history.

Are BBQ Wings Healthy?

A lot of people automatically think chicken wings are unhealthy, but this actually isn’t the case. They contain tons of protein and an impressive array of vitamins and minerals – it’s the deep-frying that diminishes their nutritional value. Luckily, these wings are baked instead of fried. And thanks to my trusty cooking method, they’re still crispy as can be!

What You’ll Need

It’s so nice to be able to know exactly what goes into your food, which is another reason why these homemade chicken wings are the way to go. To know the exact amounts you’ll need, scroll down to the recipe card.

For the Chicken Wings

  • Chicken Wings: Stick with classic bone-in wings.
  • Canola Oil
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Smoked Paprika: If you’re not a fan of smoky flavor, feel free to use regular paprika instead.
  • Sea Salt
  • Ground Black Pepper

For the Honey BBQ Sauce

  • BBQ Sauce: Use your favorite brand – I like Stubb’s.
  • Honey: Raw and unfiltered honey has the most health benefits.
  • Stone Ground Mustard
  • Sriracha Sauce: Go ahead and add as much or as little as you’d like.

Can I Use Frozen Wings?

I highly recommend buying fresh chicken wings, but if frozen ones are your only option, you can totally use those instead. Just be sure to thaw them out completely before you season and cook them. This helps the spices adhere to the meat and ensures juicy results.

How to Make Baked Honey BBQ Chicken Wings

Follow this simple process for fabulous baked wings every time. Bon appetit!

  1. Heat Oven & Prep Pan: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Prepare a baking sheet with a wire rack on top or line it with tin foil.
  2. Pat Chicken Dry: Place the chicken wings into a large bowl and pat them dry.
  3. Season: Drizzle the wings with the canola oil, then add the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, sea salt and pepper. Toss to evenly coat all of the chicken.
  4. Bake: Place the wings onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake them for 40 minutes, using tongs to flip them over halfway through.
  5. Broil: Turn the Broiler on to HIGH and place the chicken underneath it for 8-10 minutes, or until it’s browned.
  6. Combine Sauce Ingredients: In the meantime, heat a medium-sized saucepan to medium heat. Add in the BBQ sauce, honey, stone ground mustard and sriracha sauce.
  7. Let Simmer: Stir the ingredients together and bring the mixture to a simmer, allowing it to simmer for 2 minutes. Remove the sauce from the heat and set it aside.
  8. Coat Wings: Remove the chicken wings from the oven and place them into a large heat-proof bowl. Pour in the honey BBQ sauce, then use a pair of tongs to toss the wings in the sauce until they’re all evenly coated.
  9. Enjoy! Garnish the wings with chopped chives if you’d like and serve them hot.

Tips for Success

These crispy, flavorful wings will have you licking your fingers and your plate. With the following tips, you’ll finesse them every time.

  • Season to Taste: Feel free to fine-tune your sauce and spice rub to suit your tastes. If you’d like to crank up the heat without changing the sauce, add chili powder to the spice blend.
  • Don’t Skip the Broiling: The secret to achieving crispy wings doesn’t involve coating the chicken in flour or baking soda – it’s all about the broiling. Those 8-10 minutes under the broiler are when the magic happens.
  • Use Tongs to Handle Your Wings: It’s best to avoid touching things that just came out of a hot oven. That’s where the tongs come in. They’re also useful when you’re tossing the wings with the sauce.

Serving Suggestions

Want to pair your wings with something equally tempting? Take your pick!

  • Serve With Tomato Avocado Cucumber Salad: With a burst of freshness in every bite, this Tomato Avocado Cucumber Salad is the perfect way to cool down your mouth after a spicy wing. Now you’ve got a complete game-day meal!
  • Pair With Frozen Rose: A 5-Minute Frose is always refreshing – especially when it’s next to a plate of homemade BBQ wings. Why not help yourself?
  • Or a Margarita! A good margarita goes wonderfully with backed chicken wings. I recommend this classic margarita recipe or this skinny margarita.
  • Serve With Fries and Garlic Aioli: Crispy wings and crispy French fries are a match made in heaven. These easy Baked Fries come with a crave-worthy roasted garlic aioli sauce to complete the dish.

Storage and Reheating

Let your wings cool to room temperature before you transfer them to the fridge, but don’t leave them out for longer than 2 hours. Place any leftovers into an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 3 days.

Reheat the wings on a foil-lined baking sheet at 350°F. After 15-20 minutes, or once their internal temperature reaches 165°F, remove them from the oven and enjoy them.

Can I Freeze Baked Wings?

You can easily freeze these wings for up to 1 month if you’d like. Place them into a freezer-safe container with parchment or wax paper in between layers if you have to stack them. Thaw out frozen wings in the fridge before you reheat them.
