What You’ll Need
These air fried sweet potato fries come together super fast with a handful of ingredients. Round up the following, and let’s get started. (You can find exact amounts and directions in the recipe card below.)
- Sweet potatoes – I like to peel my sweet potatoes to remove the skin. But if you don’t mind it, you can leave it on. Totally up to you.
- Oil – My preference is avocado oil. However, you could also use olive oil, canola oil, or grape seed oil if that’s what you have.
- Spices – I use a combination of salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and cinnamon. My surprise ingredient. Don’t knock it till you try it.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Never made homemade fries before? No worries. It’s way easier than you think. And, I guarantee that after you try it once, you’ll be making your fries from scratch from here on out!
- Cut the fries. Peel the skin from the sweet potatoes and cut them into 1/4″ to 1/2″ slices. (See the tips section below for more info on how to cut fries.)
- Soak the fries. This is a critical step and one that most recipes repeat. But it’s the game changer. Soak your sweet potato fries for at least 30 minutes or up to 1 hour.
- Pat them dry. After soaking the fries, pat them dry with a paper towel.
- Season the fries. Add your fries to a large bowl, then season them with avocado oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and cinnamon. Toss to make sure all of the fries are evenly coated.
- Cook the fries. Set the air fryer to 400°F, and allow it to heat for 2 minutes. Next, spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and add the seasoned sweet potato fries to the air fryer. Do NOT crowd the basket. You don’t want them to touch. This could mean you’ll be doing multiple batches, but doing so will ensure you have the perfect fry. Bake for 10-12 minutes, shaking the air fryer basket or flipping the fries halfway through.
- Serve! Remove your fries from the air fryer and serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.
Do I Need to Soak the Sweet Potatoes Before Frying?
You don’t have to. But soaking definitely ensures you’ll get crispy fries. Soaking them removes excess starch, rinses off the sugars, and ensures they don’t stick to the bottom of the air fryer.
Can I Make Sweet Potato Fries in the Oven?
Yes, you can absolutely make these fries in the oven. Follow all the same steps, then preheat the oven to 425°F and spread your sweet potato fries on a greased baking sheet. Bake them for 35-40 minutes, or until the fries are browned and crispy, flipping the baking sheet halfway through.
Tips for Success
Here are a few tricks of the trade I’ve learned from cutting and making my own fries. Sweet potatoes can be a little hard to cut at times, but if you use these tips, it will be easy peasy!
- Use a SHARP knife. This is the best way to make clean, precise cuts.
- Peel your sweet potato, and create a stable base for cutting. You can do this by slicing a small piece off of one side of the potato to create a flat surface for you to cut on. Next, turn the sweet potato so the cut side is on the cutting board. This creates a stable way for you to cut and it’s easier to hold the sweet potato, too.
- Slice the sweet potato into 1/4″ to 1/2″ slices lengthwise first. This will leave you with wide and flat slices. Lay those flat on the cutting board. Next, slice your 1/4″ to 1/2″ french fry strips. Try to make them all relatively the same width so that everything cooks evenly in the air fryer!
Serving Suggestions
So many recipes go with air fryer sweet potato fries, that’s one of the best things about them! Here are my top suggestions for what to serve with these crispy fries:
- Burgers – Sweet potato fries pair perfectly with a keto bacon cheeseburger or a paleo chipotle turkey burger with guacamole!
- Chicken – These fries will go with just about any chicken dinner you can dream up, but I highly recommend the only BBQ chicken recipe you’ll ever need, this grilled balsamic caprese chicken, or these baked chicken parmesan bites.
- Steak – Or, throw them on the side of this cast iron cowboy steak with chimichurri!
How to Store and Reheat Extras
If you end up with leftover air fryer sweet potato fries, feel free to save them for another time!
- To store. Let your fries come to room temperature, then store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
