An Easy Salty Dog Drink
You asked, so I delivered! A couple weeks ago, I did a poll on Instagram to see what kind of recipes you wanted next on JHE. For the cocktail section you said you wanted something with either Vodka, Rum or Tequila … well Vodka it is!
One of my close friends got me hooked on Vodka and grapefruit, so that’s what this cocktail is all about.
And y’all, let me tell you. It’s a good one!
What is a Salty Dog Drink?
A salty dog is a cocktail made with gin or vodka and grapefruit juice. It is typically served over ice with a salted glass rim.
My version has a little twist on a classic salty dog. I add in fresh lime juice and grapefruit la croix or sparkling water for a little bubbly. You’ll love it, it almost doesn’t even taste like a drink. It’s that smooth. (a.k.a. dangerous)
Tools and Ingredients:
- a cocktail shaker
- a measuring jigger, used to measure ounces for cocktails (I love the one with a handle, makes it easier to pour the liquid into the cocktail shaker)
- a high ball glass & ice
- coarse sea salt
- vodka
- grapefruit juice
- lime juice
- grapefruit sparkling water
I think one of my favorite things about this drink, besides the fact that you only need 4 ingredients is how easy it is to make. There is no sugar or simple syrup, it’s just straight up easy no fuss ingredients. But the combo of them all is incredibly addicting. It’s so light and refreshing which is perfect as we head into the summer.
How to Make a Salty Dog Cocktail:
- Salt the rim of two glasses.
- To a cocktail shaker add fresh grapefruit juice, vodka (or gin) and lime juice. Put the top on and shake.
- Fill cups with ice and evenly pour cocktail over ice. Top with grapefruit la croix.
Can I Make a Salty Dog in a Pitcher?
Yes. To make this salty dog recipe in a pitcher, which would give you 10 cocktails, use the following measurements.
- 3 3⁄4 cups of grapefruit juice
- 3 3⁄4 cups of grapefruit la croix
- 2 cups of vodka
- 6 2⁄3 ounces of lime juice
Add all ingredients to a pitcher, stir and serve over ice.
I guarantee this will be a show stopper for you this summer. It’s a great cocktail to have poolside, because it won’t be heavy on your stomach. It kinda reminds me of a mojito from the refreshing and light perspective.
So make this cocktail for two or throw it in a pitcher for a party, but whatever you decide to do just make it. It will definitely quench your thirst and you’ll fall in love with the freshness of it.
Cheers to Friday friends!

Can’t wait to try this! What kind of shrub do you put on the glass?
Such a refreshing cocktail! I garnish with mint!
I just love trying new cocktails when I travel, although I try to make them at home, it’s not easy to replicate the taste, but still, I try following the recipe. By the way, thanks for this recipe. Trying this weekend.
This is an easy one to perfect! I hope you enjoy!!
What is La Croix? Is that a brand?
LaCroix is a brand of sparkling water. Any brand of grapefruit flavored sparkling water will do!
Pro tip: Do NOT put the La Croix (or sparkling water) in the shaker before shaking it up, The carbonation in the sparkling water will make your shaker explode in your hands when you shake it up! Add the sparkling water *after* shaking and pouring into an ice-filled glass. This rule applied to any cocktail that included sparkling water or other carbonated beverage addition.
Yes! This is true! You always want to add the carbonation after you do the shaking! I have updated! Thanks!
I love this idea! So simple and pretty! Love this so much!
Love the balance of the grapefruit with vodka; perfect combination!
Oh my goodness! This cocktail looks really good and easy!
Oh WOW!! This sounds really, reeeeeally GOOD!!
Oh my goodness, you had me drooling. This is a gorgeous cocktail that would be all too easy to down lol
I don’t care much for the flavor of vodka, but the grapefruit really cuts that taste out of this cocktail! I loved it!
Great idea to use the La Croix, too! Vodka & grapefruit used to be my go-to cocktail – can’t wait to give this one a try!
