These easy, grilled sweet potatoes with tangy crema are a great way to add more veggies into your weeknights and cookouts.
- Quick. This side dish is ready in only 25 minutes!
- Tex-Mex. Herby cilantro, smokey cumin, and spicy red pepper flakes contribute to the sweet potatoes’ Tex-Mex flavor profile.

- Great for cookouts. Set them on the side of the grill as you cook up the rest of your lunch.
Recipe Ingredients
The smokey cilantro lime crema with spicy red pepper flakes perfectly balances out this recipe’s sweetness. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact amounts.
For the Sweet Potatoes
- Sweet potatoes – Make sure they’re evenly sliced.
- Avocado oil – Olive oil and canola oil work too.
- Salt – Kosher salt is best. Garlic salt can add more flavor too.
For the Cilantro Lime Crema
- Plain Greek yogurt – It must be unsweetened. Feel free to use Mexican crema or sour cream.
- Fresh cilantro – Avoid dried cilantro because it can add a stale flavor.
- Scallions – Chives are a great swap.
- Red wine vinegar – You can also use sherry vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
- Lime juice – Lemon juice can be used instead.
- Garlic – I prefer fresh garlic or garlic paste.
- Ground cumin – Go for taco seasoning if that’s what you’ve got on hand.
- Red pepper flakes – Cayenne pepper works as well.
- Salt – Use kosher salt or pink Himalayan salt for this.
How To Grill Sweet Potatoes
Letting the sweet potatoes char slightly adds more natural sweetness. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card.
- Season them. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Season the sweet potatoes with avocado oil and salt on all sides.
- Grill them. Set the sweet potatoes on the grill for 10 minutes, flipping occasionally, or until fork-tender. Remove them from the heat and set them aside.
- Make the crema. Blend all of the ingredients for the cilantro lime crema in the food processor until smooth. Set it aside.
- Serve. Add the grilled sweet potatoes to a serving plate and drizzle with crema to taste. Enjoy!
Tips & Variations
Melty cheddar and crispy bacon take these grilled sweet potatoes to the next level.
- Add crunch. Cook 4-5 bacon strips until crispy and crumble them. Sprinkle it over the sweet potatoes for a bit of crunch. The same goes for crunchy pork rinds.
- Create a nacho-style meal. Use the filling for my Ground Beef Tacos to top the sweet potatoes for a hearty nacho-style dinner.
- Use avocado crema. Blend 1/4-1/2 cup diced avocado into the crema ingredients for an easy variation.
- Crank up the heat. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon extra red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or chili oil into the crema at a time for more heat. You can also drizzle your favorite hot sauce over the sweet potatoes.
- Make them cheesy. Sprinkle 1/4-1/2 cup sharp cheddar over the sweet potatoes 5 minutes before removing them from the grill. Let the cheese melt and then set them aside.
What To Serve With Grilled Sweet Potatoes
These grilled sweet potatoes are the perfect side for Tex-Mex style meals. Serve them with my Skirt Steak Tacos or Ground Beef Tacos. My Turkey Tostadas and Salsa Verde Carne Asada are other great options. For a bowl-style dinner, add them to my Chicken Fajita Salad, Mexican Chopped Salad, or Chicken Burrito Bowl.
Proper Storage
Store the cilantro lime crema separately so that it doesn’t split when reheating.
- Fridge: Place them in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Discard immediately if they feel moist or sticky on the outside.
- To reheat it: Microwave them in 20-second increments until warm. You can also heat them in a pan (covered) over medium heat for 6-7 minutes.

Krista, Thank you for your wonderful recipes. I’ve been making them for my family for years. Any plans to make a cookbook?☺️
I’d love to see all tasty recipes in a collection together.
Thank you! I would love to write a cookbook and have tons of ideas – hopefully soon!
Thanks for linking this awesome dish to Saturday Dishes. Can’t wait to try it out.

Thanks Linda, hope you enjoy it when you get a chance to try! 🙂
I will have to try these. We are trying not to eat so many white potatoes, and eat more sweet potatoes. I am not a cilantro lover, but I love, love chipotle.
I am not either, but it definitely adds a nice twist to the sweet potatoes. I hope you like it Madonna! 🙂 Have a great rest of the day.
What a great looking recipe. With Labor Day this weekend I’m fully going to whip this up. I like the shorter amount of time you’re cooking them. A lot of people pretty much kill their potatoes by over cooking them. 10-16 minutes total is perfect.
Also, everyone is right, great pictures. You’re making me realize I really need to up the ante with my pictures.
Thanks Mike, you will love it for this weekend! Even my little guy liked it, which I wasn’t sure about at first because of the chipotles but he scoured it down. 🙂 I appreciate the encouragement with the photos. Just know it is a process, you should see the first pictures I took for the blog… yikes. Makes me laugh now, you will get there. Your site looks great and can’t wait to get updates. I graduated with a degree in sports wellness & management myself. 🙂
I love grilled sweet potatoes. I’m going to have to thy them with this chipotle honey lime butter. Pinned! Hope you have a good day, Krista!
They were so good and the butter definitely made the dish, love the spicy and sweet flavor. 🙂 Thanks for pinning Julie, hope you have a great day!
Oh my gosh, Krista… This awesome recipe couldn’t be any easier! It looks absolutely delicious too! I can’t wait to put these on my dinner table! Actually, they probably won’t last long on the table… they’ll be devoured in nano seconds! 🙂
You crack me up Becca!! They were devoured in nano seconds at our house too. I hope you and the fam enjoy them! 🙂
Yummy!!! I am so boring, I usually just cook my sweet potato in the microwave. I will definitely give this a try the next time we barbecue 🙂 Thank you so much for joining us and sharing at Best of the Weekend! Pinning to our party board. Enjoy a happy weekend and please join us next Friday.
I don’t know about boring, you have some pretty fancy recipes over at your place too! Thanks for the sweet comments and stopping by Lisa. 🙂
I love sweet potatoes too and these look incredible! Plus the pictures are yummilicious! Have a wonderful weekend!
haha.. well they tasted yummilicious as well! 🙂 Have a great rest of your Sunday Serena!
Love how easy and simple…but very classy this dish is! I love my grill, too! I’m a charcoal girl…low and slow. So, if I’m putting anything on (meat), I have to start the whole process by 10 am. But, with your creation here– it’s perfect to throw on right before it’s time to eat! Pinning! (Love the long pics– especially for pinning!)
I use to be a charcoal girl too, thats how I was raised. But I’m also impatience and love the convenience of turning the grill on and throwing the meat/vegetables/what not on the grill 3 minutes later. But, nothing can beat that charcoal taste. 🙂 You and your boys will love this dish! Thanks for the sweet comments!
These look so easy to make and delicious!! I am loving the butter and the added kick 🙂
It is super easy, and the butter is definitely the star in this dish. You will LOVE it! 🙂
I’ve been wanting to do this for a while! Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite things and they must be so delicious with a smoky flavor. Pinning!

I work with sweet potatoes a lot, but I have never sliced them that way and placed them on the grill like that! Totally doing this recipe this weekend! Great timing!
I guess we must just be on the same wave length. 🙂 Hope you enjoy this different take on sweet potatoes Tahny! 🙂
