Whether you whip it up for dinner or as an appetizer, this Homemade Steak Pizza will make your taste buds dance! With juicy steak, whipped goat cheese, peppery arugula, and a nice mix of veggies, it’s full of big flavors.

If you’ve been following along for a while, you know that I am not a pizza purist. When I’m making pizza at home, you can bet I’m going to be experimenting with different flavors and toppings rather than sticking with the same-old, same-old. This homemade steak pizza follows in the footsteps of my Thai Chicken Pizza and Grilled Prosciutto Peach Flatbread Pizza, combining my favorite homemade crust with some non-traditional toppings to create something totally unique. Basically, this pizza is heaven in a bite, if heaven could be compacted into a bite. 🙂
Here’s what makes this pizza so swoon-worthy:
- Feels a little fancy. As I mentioned above: this is not your typical pizza! It’s kind of a fancy snooty pizza. But you will be so glad you went the snooty route instead of the plain Jane pepperoni route because it is SO good!
- Irresistible combination of flavors. The sweetness from the balsamic reduction (optional, but I REALLY recommend it!), the richness of the goat cheese, and the peppery arugula all balance perfectly with the juicy steak, sweet roasted red peppers and onions, and earthy mushrooms.
- Homemade dough makes all the difference. While store-bought pizza crust can work in a pinch, there’s nothing quite like making your own homemade crust. It’s also one of those kitchen tasks that gives you a sense of satisfaction—and even a little bit of zen when you’re kneading that dough!
What You’ll Need
Like all pizza recipes, you can customize this one with your own favorite toppings, but this is my formula for success! Scroll down to the recipe card to find the ingredient quantities and recipe instructions.
- Pizza dough – This Homemade Pizza Dough is my go-to.
- Olive oil
- Roasted red pepper – You can use the kind from a jar or roast your own in the oven.
- Filet mignon – We’re keeping it high-end here! (But you can also use flank steak or another more affordable option, so long as it’s cooked properly to ensure it’s tender.)
- Sweet onion – Like Maui, Walla Walla, or Vidalia.
- Mushrooms – I use cremini or white mushrooms.
- Fresh arugula
- Optional toppings – Balsamic Reduction for a sweet-and-tangy finishing touch, grated Parmesan, or red pepper flakes.
- Whipped goat cheese – A simple combination of goat cheese, cream cheese, garlic powder, and thyme. Yum!
How to Make Steak Pizza
This is just a brief overview of the steps involved in making steak pizza. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card.
- Make the pizza dough. Or if you use store-bought, take it out of the fridge so it can come to room temperature.
- Prepare. Preheat your oven to 500ºF and place a pizza stone or baking sheet in the oven so it also warms up.
- Make the whipped goat cheese. Blend all of the ingredients in your food processor until they’re smooth and creamy.
- Cook the veggies. Warm a tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, then add the mushrooms and onions. Sauté until they’re slightly browned, then season to taste.
- Cook the steak. Season the steak with salt and pepper and cook it in the same skillet, with another tablespoon of oil. Sear on both sides for 4 to 5 minutes, then remove from the heat.
- Prep the dough. Sprinkle flour onto a large piece of parchment paper and roll out the dough to your desired size, shape, and thickness. Drizzle it with a tablespoon of olive oil.
- Assemble. Drop dollops of the whipped goat cheese onto the pizza and spread them a bit, then layer on the onions, mushrooms, and peppers.
- Bake. Place the pizza on the hot stone or pan and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the crust is baked through.
- Finish. Add sliced filet mignon and the arugula. Drizzle on the balsamic reduction, Parmesan, and red pepper flakes if you’re using them, then cut and serve.
Tips and Variation Ideas
These extra pointers and variations will help you make sure your steak pizza turns out perfect!
- Let the dough rest if you have to. If the dough keeps shrinking back when you’re trying to roll it out, give it (and yourself) a 10 minute break. I find that after 10 minutes, it relaxes enough that it’s easier to roll it into the shape I want.
- Swap the goat cheese for feta. You know what else would go well with this steak pizza? Whipped feta! Simply swap the goat cheese for feta in the topping.
- Try different greens. Baby spinach would also work well if you want a green that’s a little milder.
Serving Suggestions
Since I usually buy a bag of arugula for this steak pizza and there’s always some extra, I use it to make a simple salad to serve on the side. Toss it with this tangy Lemon Vinaigrette Recipe or one of these Healthy Homemade Salad Dressings, along with any odds and ends you have in your pantry or crisper drawer like veggies, nuts, croutons, etc.
How to Store and Reheat Leftovers
Unlike those cheesy carryout pizzas that make an epic next-morning breakfast, this homemade steak pizza is best enjoyed right away. But if you do have leftovers…
- Refrigerator: Store any leftover steak pizza in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
- To reheat: Pull the arugula off of the pizza. Bake the pizza in a 450ºF oven until it’s heated through, then add the arugula back (or add new arugula for a refresh).

Aww.. thanks Deb! Thanks so much for hosting such a great party.
Very cool! I haven’t tried my own pizza in forever because I used to date this guy who hated homemade pizza crust. Yeah, don’t worry, he’s history now. =)
Anyway, I like how the arugula is added after the pizza’s baked so it’s fresh instead of all wilt-y. Neat idea!
WhAT, how can you hate homemade pizza crust? Good thing he is gone, crazy boy!
Well, sounds like you are in need of a homemade pizza and this one will definitely hit the spot girl. Go out and make it. 🙂
SERIOUSLY, Krista… Can we please be neighbors? You can cook and I’ll let you borrow all of the ingredients you want 😉

This pizza is stunning Krista! Wow, steak and crumbled goat cheese on pizza? It sounds amazing together with the arugula, steak and balsamic reduction! I will never look at plain jane pizza the same way again and will only be dreaming about this fancy snooty pizza from now on. Yum!
haha… love it kelly. You always crack me up! Happy dreaming… of the snooty pizza that is. 🙂
Isn’t that crazy how fast they go?! I was lucky to watch when they had it here in Park City the last time. You won’t ever see me doing this…. I’m scared of (uncontrollable) speed!
Love this creative pizza… so different and oh, so delicious looking!
Yes, I was having a heart attach watching them. Because well, the last time I snowboarded Mike and I BOTH ended up in the hospital!!! I just get freaked out going so fast. But hey, to each his own. They are rocking it and good for them!
Thanks so much Gloria, so happy you liked it.
Looks like a fantabulous pizza Krista! Lovin the steak recipes you’ve been pumping out. 🙂
Thanks Melanie, it is fantabulous! In fact, I have been craving it all week! 🙂 So glad you are enjoying the steak recipes lately, I know my hubbie is too. We are normally a chicken house, so he is loving all this meat. haha
Thanks Melanie, it tastes fantabulous too! 🙂 My husband is loving all the steak recipes too, we are normally a chicken house so he is eating up all this steak and loving every second of it. 🙂
Your homemade pizza looks so great, I especially love that rich delicious steak that’s happening here!
Thanks Pamela, the combination of the steak sweet balsamic and spicy arugula was seriously awesome. So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
I watched the snowboarding cross too! It was my first time seeing it and got hooked immediately. It’s crazy how many of them fell down! I know, I felt so bad for Jacobellis too!
This pizza sounds amazing! Love steak with balsamic reduction!
I know right! I think I was so hooked because I was envisioning my last snowboarding trip in March. It was amazing, but BOTH my husband and I had some hard wipe outs and ended up in the ER. 🙁 {broken bones.. eek} But I would still so do it again because its a blast, so I get why those snowboarders do it!
So glad you enjoyed the pizza. I need to try it with your spaghetti squash crust next time! 🙂
I saw the snowboarding cross last night and felt so so bad for her. And you could see the pain all over her face. Poor girl!
This pizza on the other hand is just too BEAUTIFUL!! I don’t even want to eat it. Wait I lie, I want to gobble gobble it despite it’s fancy snooty status 🙂 I love everything about the toppings; steak, goat cheese, balsamic hmmmm! Ok, I shall go drool over this on my drive home. Thank you!
I know, it just broke my heart. 🙁
haha.. Zainab you always crack me up with the descriptions. Glad I could make you drool, thats the goal. Just make sure you wipe the drool off before you walk in the house and your hubbie sees it, cuz thats just gross. 🙂
This is my kind of pizza! Can’t wait to try your whole wheat crust recipe. I’ve been looking for a good one!
Its definitely one of my favorites Danelle. Hope you like it! 🙂
This looks so good, I am wondering if you know of where I could purchase whole wheat pizza crust already made to cut down on time?
YES!! My favorite pre-made pizza dough is from traders joe. Its seriously awesome! 🙂
This is beautiful, Krista. If there’s steak involved, I’m in! 🙂
haha… you and I are on the same boat with that steak Andi. 🙂
I love snowboarding cross as well but I think I prefer biathlon even more. There’s something about it that I found fascinating.
I mean, the fact the targets can be as small as two inches or so across, and competitors shoot at them from 164 feet away after skiing their heart, it’s incredible.
It’s like standing in center field of a baseball stadium and trying to shoot a walnut at home plate, after running 3 miles as fast as you can. Superhumans…
Anyhoo, this is such an awesome flavor combo Krista for a pizza topping, I want to try it!
haha.. I know! The biathlon is pretty intense. I hear that they train with their heart rate way up to get use to shooting with all that adrenaline and shaking from your heart pumping. Truly talented!
Hope you get a chance to try it Mike, the flavors definitely are awesome.
