The Best Moscato Sangria Recipe
I can almost see the end in sight. The last day of school here in Texas is May 29th. But let’s be real, teachers usually don’t “teach” anything the last week so I’m declaring May 22nd MY last day of school. I may just throw myself and Cason a big party for committing and conquering homeschool these least 3 months! It’s been hard but I’m glad I proved to myself that I could do it and Cason did great, most days. We definitely both had our melt down days.
Anywho. Enough of that. As a way to celebrate, let’s make a cocktail! Y’all know my love for wine! One of the first wines I ever drank was Moscato and since we are coming up on the summer I decided to use that light, refreshing wine and make a Sangria out of it! You’re going to love it!
What is Sangria?
Sangria is a popular alcoholic drink that has it’s origins in Spain. It traditionally consists of red wine, chopped fruit, citrus and sometimes other liquors like grand marnier, vokda, brandy or cognac are added. You can also make sangria with white wine or sparkling wine. What makes Sangria so good is, as it sits the fruit gets infused with the wine and liquor making it incredibly deep in flavor, light and refreshing. It’s one of the most popular drinks in Spanish culture!
What is Moscato?
If you’re a sweet wine person, you are going to love Moscato. I find that Moscato is s a good base wine for beginners because it’s not overly dry, it’s sweet and of course has bubbles. The wine itself has notes of mandarin orange, ripe pear, meyer lemon and honeysuckle which is why it’s going to be great to use for sangria!
What does Moscato Sangria taste like?
This sweet fruity white wine Sangria is an irresistible blend of bubbly Moscato wine with hints of orange, peach and strawberry. It is served cold over ice with all the liquor infused fruits. Just think of it like an adult fruit punch. I recommend serving it in clear glass cups or wine glasses so you can see all the beautiful colors!
Ingredients for Moscato Sangria
All you’ll need for this light refreshing cocktail are wine, liquor, fresh fruit and sparkling water or ginger ale
- Moscato Wine: This light bubbly sweet wine is perfect for refreshing cocktail out in the sun.
- Orange Liquor: The orange flavor compliments the fresh sliced orange used in the sangria. I recommend using either grand marnier, triple sec or cointreau.
- Citrus: Sliced limes and oranges are a staple with Sangria, and that is what I used here as well.
- Fresh Fruit: This part is really up to you and what you prefer. For this recipe I chose to use sliced strawberries and peaches. However, I also think mango, pears are fresh raspberries would also pair well with this sweet Moscato.
- Mint:Adding fresh mint leaves infuses a nice herbaceous flavor to this sweet sangria.
- Ginger Ale or Sparkling Water: using the ginger ale will add a slight ginger taste to the sangria, but if you’re looking to cut the calories and mellow the sangria out a bite then the sparkling water will be your go to.
Best Wines to use for Moscato Sangria:
My philosophy on best wines when making a sangria is this: not the cheapest but not the most expensive. I like to go middle of the ground on price so I don’t get a headache, but also knowing that I’m going to be mixed the wine with other flavors I don’t want to go “top shelf.”
How to make Moscato Sangria:
Making Sangria is so easy. It literally takes 5 minutes to make and then the rest is just letting the flavors sit and infuse together for a smooth delicious cocktail!
- Mix: Add Grand Marnier, lime slices, orange slices, strawberries, peaches, mint leaves and moscato to a large pitcher.
- Let Infuse and Chill: Stir and let sit for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator. But for best results, let sit for 4 hours.
- Serve: When ready to serve, (optional) top with ginger ale or sparkling water. Serve over ice with liquor infused fruit from sangria.
