Our family practically spends the whole summer crowded around a smoking grill. Whether it’s a low-key lunch or a big neighborhood barbecue, everyone’s happy when turkey burgers are on the menu.

Classic hamburgers are great and all, but after a while, they just get old. Since grilling season is full of beef burgers and pork hot dogs, switching things up with turkey is a great way to step out of the box.

Once you bite into a burger that features a homemade turkey patty, you’ll be met with an explosion of savory goodness. The meat is infused with herby, garlicky, tangy, earthy seasonings that’ll have your taste buds lost in a real-life daydream! No matter what you layer between those buns alongside it, you’ll be reaching for a second helping as soon as your plate is empty.

Are Turkey Burgers More Healthy?

Another huge selling point I have to mention is the low saturated fat content of turkey burgers as compared to their beefy counterparts. Certain fats are actually beneficial for our bodies, but saturated fat can raise cholesterol and lead to heart problems. Ground turkey has less of the bad fat and more of the good fat, making it a much better option than ground beef when it comes to nutrition.

If you want your turkey burgers to contain even less fat, opt for ground turkey labeled 99% fat-free. Move over, ground beef – there’s a new staple in town!

What You’ll Need

Without further ado, let’s talk about the ingredients you’ll need for the turkey patties themselves. Scroll down to the recipe card to see the specific quantities. Feel free to use your favorite buns and any desired fillings for the assembly of the burgers.

  • Ground Turkey Meat
  • Almond Flour: This antioxidant-rich flour keeps your patties gluten-free.
  • Eggs: Separate out the yolks and discard them – you only need the whites for this recipe.
  • Dried Parsley
  • Ground Cumin: To add some awesome depth of flavor.
  • Red Onion: Finely diced.
  • Garlic Cloves: Freshly minced.
  • Salt & Pepper

How to Make the Best Turkey Patties

Within minutes, the ingredients above will be transformed into the most succulent turkey patties ever. Let’s get grilling!

Combine Ingredients: Add the ground turkey, almond flour, eggs whites, dried parsley, cumin, red onion, garlic, salt and pepper to a large bowl. Use your hands to mix everything together until the ingredients are well combined.

Form Patties: Form the meat mixture into 6-8 evenly-sized patties.

Heat Grill: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat, approximately 375-400°F.

Cook: Place the prepared patties onto the grill and cook each side for 4-6 minutes. The patties will be perfectly cooked once their internal temperature reaches 165°F (any cooler means the turkey is still considered unsafe to consume).

Build Your Burgers

After the patties are fully cooked, it’s time to start assembling your turkey burgers. We like to load ours up with lettuce, tomato, ketchup, avocado balsamic caramelized onions and Chipotle Pepper Mayo, but you can use any fillings and condiments you’re craving. You could even arrange the buns and fillings on a picnic table and have everyone build their own burgers!

If you need your sandwiches to be gluten-free, make sure the buns you use are compliant, and to up your burger game I highly recommend toasting the buns! Just trust me!

Tips for Success

Take a second to review the following tips before you jump into this recipe. Flawless turkey burgers are coming your way!

  • Use Food-Safe Gloves to Keep Your Hands Clean: The best way to make homemade burger patties is by using your own two hands to combine the ingredients and form the discs. If you’re not too keen on mixing meat with your bare hands, pop on some food-safe gloves before you do so.
  • Grill the Buns: Who doesn’t like a toasted burger bun? I highly recommend tossing that bread onto the grill to warm it up before building your burgers. Yum!
  • Can I Cook These on the Stovetop? Absolutely. If outdoor grilling isn’t an option, you can cook your patties over the stove using a high-quality nonstick skillet or stovetop grill pan. If you use a skillet, add a little bit of oil to the pan before you heat it up since it doesn’t have the raised grill grates to further prevent sticking.
  • A Meat Thermometer is a Must: It’s super important that the internal temperature of each turkey patty reaches 165°F. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer to ensure they’re ready for consumption. Avoid leaving the patties on the grill when they’re done cooking, as they may start to dry out.

Serving Suggestions

You can pair these burgers with basically any side dish and expect an irresistible meal. If you’d like to use the grill as your sole cooking method, you can’t go wrong with a healthy veggie side like Lemon Grilled Asparagus or Grilled Zucchini Bruschetta. Both of them cook at the same temperature as the patties!

How to Store and Reheat Extras

Once cooled, leftover turkey patties can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them in a 375°F oven or toaster oven for about 3 minutes per side, or until their internal temperature registers at 165°F. Place a pan on the rack below the patties to catch any potential drippings.

Can I Freeze These?

While you can technically freeze your turkey patties after they’re cooked, I find that this tends to dry them out. It’s better to freeze the raw patties before you grill them.

To do so, you’ll first have to flash-freeze the discs on a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. Once they’re firm (about 30 minutes), wrap each patty in a tight layer of plastic wrap and store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw out frozen turkey patties in the fridge before you grill them.
